Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Not a day goes by that I don't tell at least someone - whether it's a member of Congress, a brother or sister in the aviation community or a fellow air traveler on my flight - that I represent the finest collection of safety professionals the world has to offer. NATCA's membership is a multi-talented controller workforce that embodies the very best qualities of skill, courage, poise and determination that rises to any challenge put before it.
Your efforts go largely unnoticed by a traveling public that gets home safely every time because you have made perfection your minimum performance standard. But sometimes, your feats of skill to ensure safety cross over into the realm of extraordinary and while everyone in this union has a story about their most memorable "saves," I want to place a spotlight on these examples of heroic work on a yearly basis.
Therefore, it gives me great pride and pleasure in announcing NATCA's second annual "Archie League Air Traffic Control Medal of Safety," awards program. Named for the founding father of ATC, this will serve as our way of recognizing some of our best work of the year in front of a national and local media audience, Congress, the aviation community and your fellow union members.
We are asking you to please take the time to document the finest saves in your facility, both those that have already occurred since Jan. 1 and those that happen from now until Dec. 1. Both fac reps and individual members can nominate saves, using the form located at the top of this page. We would like to record as much detail about these events as possible, from names and accounts of the pilots involved to specifics about the work of the controllers, tapes/transcripts if possible and stories from your fellow controllers who witnessed it. Aside from establishing as thorough an accounting as possible, the details will add depth to the stories we plan to publish in an awards booklet.
We will gather the nominations in December 2005 and take the time to determine award winners from each region. Then, we will salute the winners in a special Washington, D.C., ceremony and press conference next spring. For any questions, please contact Media Relations Manager Doug Church at 202/220-9802 or dchurch@natcadc.org. Thank you, in advance, for the great work that you do every day and for your participation in what we think will become a very prestigious program.
In solidarity,
John S. Carr President |
