| COSTELLO RECEIVES NATCA'S HIGHEST LEGISLATIVE AWAR |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 30, 2007 CONTACT: David Gillies, 202.225.5661 COSTELLO RECEIVES NATCA'S HIGHEST LEGISLATIVE AWARD WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) today received the National Air Traffic Controllers Association's (NATCA's) highest legislative award - the Sentinel of Safety Award - in recognition of his long-time support of issues important to its membership. Costello, Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee, lead an effort last year to ensure the collective bargaining rights of the air traffic control workforce during its negotiation of a new contract with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Current law allows the FAA to impose its last, best offer after an impasse in negotiations has been declared, and that is what the FAA did. In an attempt to avoid this outcome, Costello introduced legislation with then-Congresswoman Sue Kelly (R-NY), H.R. 4755, the FAA Fair Labor Management Dispute Resolution Act, that would have forced both sides to an impartial third party for binding arbitration. Despite having over 260 cosponsors, 75 of which were Republicans, the Republican House Leadership did not call for a vote on the bill. Costello then introduced a discharge petition in an attempt to secure a vote on the bill, but no Republicans supported this effort. "I am honored to receive this award from a very dedicated group of professionals," said Costello. "Our air traffic controllers carry a tremendous responsibility to work everyday - the safety of the traveling public - and they are a big reason we have the safest airspace in the world. I will continue to work to ensure that the working men and women of this country have a strong voice in matters regarding aviation, and that includes reforming the bargaining process with the FAA."
